Subaru was born out of Fuji Heavy Industries, which
started with aircraft engines. It was founded in 1953 by Kenji Kita. The
company ranks among the top 30 automakers in the world. Their cars are also
ranked highly on resale value.
Subaru cars are loved for their unique engineering.
Familiar names on Zimbabwean roads are the Impreza, Legacy, and Forester. Whilst
Toyota Zimbabwe has the dealership, most Subarus on Zimbabwe’s roads are grey
imports. New vehicle sales have been slow. For the North American market, where
they are focused, Subarus use a boxer engine and all wheel drive. They have
specific target markets within the motorsport industry, and among those that
desire them for their off road capabilities. The cars are also popular on yhe race
track, due to their handling.
Toyota took interest in Subaru since 2005, and
currently owns about a fifth of the company. The two have collaborated on many
projects since.
The
brand has taken a special interest in Motor Rallying, using versions of the
Impreza WRX, with many successes scored over the years.
